The Ballet Academy of Charleston and local author Mary Ann Claud are partnering to offer a summer choreography camp bringing Claud’s new young adult novel, Alex Dances, to life. The camp is geared to students between the ages of twelve to sixteen years old and will take place from July 29 to August 2, 2019.
Alex Dances tells the story of Alex Dixon, a teenage dancer who will do whatever it takes to achieve a successful career in ballet. She is determined to prove to her family that she is meant for this artistic path, despite their doubts. Local dancers (intermediate level) are invited to join this camp, learn the basic principles of choreography, and express their own creativity by telling this story through their own original choreography.
“We’re excited to have the opportunity to integrate “Alex Dances” into our camp; teaching the students not only choreography but also determination, as laid out in the book,” says School Director, Corina Fimian.
Camp will take place each day from 9 AM – 12 PM at the Ballet Academy of Charleston, West Ashley. On the final day of camp (August 2), the dancers will perform Alex Dances for friends, family, and the general public. The camp costs $160 and registration is required. Alex Dances is available online and in several independent bookstores.
